Safety Instructions

At Tawira, your safety and satisfaction are our top priorities. Our Authentic Batana Oil is a natural, single-ingredient product derived from the kernel of the American oil palm (Elaeis oleifera), hand-extracted by the Miskito people of La Moskitia, Honduras, using methods unchanged for over 500 years. It is renowned for its nourishing, scalp-balancing, and hair-strengthening properties. However, as with any natural hair care product, it's important to use it safely to ensure the best results and avoid potential adverse reactions. Please follow these safety instructions carefully before using our Batana oil.

Step 1: Perform a Patch Test

Before applying Batana oil to your hair or scalp, we strongly recommend conducting a patch test to check for any allergic reactions or sensitivities:

  1. Select a Test Area: Choose a small, discreet area of your scalp (e.g., behind your ear) or the inner side of your forearm.
  2. Apply a Small Amount: Authentic batana is solid at room temperature. Warm a pea-sized amount between your fingertips until it melts, then apply to the test area using clean fingers or a cotton swab.
  3. Wait 24-48 Hours: Leave the oil on for 24-48 hours without washing the area. Monitor for any signs of irritation, such as redness, itching, burning, or discomfort.
  4. Evaluate Results:
    • If you experience no adverse reactions (e.g., no redness, itching, or irritation), it is safe to proceed with using the product on your hair and scalp.
    • If you notice any irritation, discomfort, or allergic reaction, discontinue use immediately, rinse the area thoroughly with water, and consult a healthcare professional if symptoms persist.

Step 2: Application Instructions

Once you've confirmed that Tawira Batana Oil is safe for you to use, follow these steps for optimal application:

  1. Start with Clean Hair: Wash your hair with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo to remove dirt, oil, or product buildup. Towel-dry until your hair is damp but not soaking wet.
  2. Warm the Oil: Because authentic batana is solid at room temperature, scoop a small amount (about the size of a coin for edges and crown application) and warm it between your palms until it melts into a golden-amber liquid. Do not microwave, as high heat destroys the active compounds (linoleic acid, tocopherols, and carotenoids) that make batana effective.
  3. Apply to Scalp and Hair:
    • Section your hair to ensure even application.
    • Using your fingertips, gently massage the melted batana into your scalp, focusing on edges, crown, and any areas of thinning or dryness.
    • Distribute any remaining oil through the lengths of your hair, paying extra attention to the ends if they are dry or damaged.
  4. Leave-In Time: Leave the oil in for at least 30 minutes to 2 hours. For a deeper treatment, you can leave it on overnight by covering your hair with a silk or satin bonnet (which also protects your strands from breakage).
  5. Rinse and Shampoo: Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, then shampoo and condition as usual to remove any excess oil.

Step 3: Frequency of Use

  • For best results, use Tawira Batana Oil 2-3 times per week, consistently, for at least 90 days. Most users begin to notice baby hairs and reduced shedding around the 3-month mark, with optimal results around 6+ months.
  • Overuse may lead to buildup on the scalp, which can cause greasiness or clogged follicles. Adjust frequency based on your hair type and porosity.

Precautions and Warnings

  • For External Use Only: Tawira Batana Oil is intended for external use on hair and scalp only. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or broken skin. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Allergies: If you have a known allergy to palm-derived products or any of their components, consult a healthcare professional before using Batana oil.
  • Children and Pregnant Individuals: Consult a doctor before using Batana oil if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or applying it to a child's hair or scalp.
  • Storage: Store Tawira Batana Oil in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Our amber glass packaging is specifically designed to preserve the active compounds, so we recommend keeping it in its original bottle. Do not use if the product has changed significantly in color or smell, as this may indicate spoilage. (Note: it is normal for authentic batana to solidify in cooler temperatures and liquefy in warmer ones β€” this is a sign of its purity.)
  • Discontinue if Irritation Occurs: If you experience any irritation, redness, or discomfort during or after use, stop using the product immediately and consult a healthcare professional.

Additional Tips for Safe Use

  • Avoid Heat Styling Immediately After Use: Batana oil can make hair more susceptible to heat damage if you use styling tools like blow dryers or flat irons right after application. Allow your hair to air dry or wait at least 24 hours before heat styling.
  • Patch Test with New Batches: Because Tawira Batana Oil is hand-extracted in small batches by Miskito women, slight natural variations between batches are expected. If you're using a new batch, we recommend repeating the patch test.
  • Consult a Professional for Scalp Conditions: If you have pre-existing scalp conditions (e.g., psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, or active CCCA inflammation), consult a dermatologist before using Batana oil.
  • Protect Your Crown While You Sleep: For overnight treatments, always use a silk or satin bonnet/pillowcase. Cotton absorbs the oil and increases friction, which can cause breakage β€” especially in mature type 4 hair.
